Rusty-James is later expelled from school and placed in Biff's school. Patty- is Rusty-James' girlfriend until half-way through the book when she learns that Rusty-James was seen fooling around with a black-haired girl at a party.
She and Rusty's friend Smokey later become a couple. Smokey later admits that he made sure Patty found out about Rusty-James and the girl so that she would date him instead.
Rusty-James' mother- lives in California. She left a long time ago when Rusty was only a small boy. Rusty-James' father- lives with the boys but goes out drinking all day so he is hardly ever home; when he is home though he practically ignores Rusty. Motorcycle Boy tells Rusty-James that the reason he can't stand to be home alone is that when their mother left, she took Motorcycle Boy with her and his father went on a three-day drinking binge, and Rusty-James age 2 at the time was left alone to fend for himself for that time.

She then starts dating Smokey. Smart, educated, comes from a wealth, a pedo, a heroin user, maybe a junkie. On of the few characters who make some smart decisions. She quits heroin and gets a job as a substitute teacher. The school must be really dodgy to hire her when you consider her past romance with a student. Hates Rusty-James.
Sliced up his side. Rusty-James best friend. Mum had a stroke recently. Avoids violence, crime, generally wants to be a good person. Cautious, maybe paranoid. Compared to a Rabbit Timid, fearful, paranoid. William James, another of Rusty-James' friends. A good example of someone treating Rusty-James like a thug because he thinks he looks like a thug. The PE teacher sees some social status in being a gang member, and tries to act cool by making assumptions and asking about the crime RJ is involved in.
It is important to note that RJ plays along with this teacher and is happy to let him think he is a thug, but he also thins this teacher is a pathetic loser. Cop who Rusty-James thinks wants to murder him and his brother. Then abandoned Motorcycle boy when he was 6.
Now lives in California. Lives with a producer. Saw Motorcycle boy at age 19 and asked him to live with her. Production designer Dean Tavoularis filled all of the empty windows with glass and added neon signs and carnival lights to create the illusion of a vibrant main drag. After shooting the actors in black and white, he projected that footage on a screen behind a tank containing fish, clear water, and gray gravel, then filmed those two elements together.
