Ss great britain when was it built

Are there restaurant facilities at the SS Great Britain? Now I love Bristol. For me, as a city it has everything. What I have realised is that Bristol has a lot to thank Brunel for — as does Britain and the world for that matter. And so it became clear to me that when visiting the SS Great Britain, you learn just as much about the man who designed the ship, as you do about the ship itself.

Which made a lot of sense as I began to discover the innovation behind the design. The layout of the ship allows visitors to experience the vessel from various different perspectives: The hull from below the waterline, and the four decks —including the upper deck.

There is also the Dockyard Museum with its collection of displays, artefacts and passenger memorabilia. I found this sense of fluidity exciting! The museum is housed in wooden dock-yard-style building and was the perfect way to start my voyage.

It turned out that fire-damage was what forced the SS Great Britain to be sold off in the Falklands in — where she remained afloat as a bulk storage unit until the s.

After marvelling at original video footage of this momentous event for some time — I was eventually towed away myself. Yet there was a refreshing interactive-feel about this place, with plenty for adults and children to enjoy.

Macho-Dads can try lifting the huge propeller, while little sailors in the making can search the colour-coded zones to complete the stamps on their stamp sheet. I was intrigued to sift through the letters of former passengers and observers, and look upon old photographs and paintings. I also had the opportunity to dress up in Victorian-style clothes which I ashamedly enjoyed a little too much for a man of First stop, the hull. A view of the enormous hull from the bow end.

Many others though were swept away by the romance of the story. The daring rescue 8, miles from home, the near impossible task of raising Isambard Kingdom Brunel's great iron steam ship from the sea bed, the perilous journey across the Atlantic - all this stirred the hearts of Bristolians. After all, they were welcoming home one of their own, years after she was launched from the city. Ms Hicks had a great vantage point. She was standing on another great Brunel creation - the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

She was there with her mother and her brother, and was struck by the enthusiasm of the crowd. We were waving union jacks and cheering. It was so exciting," she said. Down on the river, Mr Boyce was taken aback by the reception. There were horns, hooters and all sorts. It was really noisy. Huge crack. It was the end of a journey home that had been anything but uneventful. After the ship had been raised from the seabed and brought to shore, the salvage team was faced with the rusting remains, peppered with holes and stripped of almost everything of any use.

An air of anticipation A long day of festivities were planned to celebrate the launch on Wednesday 19 July and the ships owners had pulled out all the stops for the celebration, most notably by inviting a very special Guest of Honour to oversee proceedings.

Perhaps most daring of all, Brunel rejected using conventional paddle wheels to drive his ship.

Instead, he gave the SS Great Britain a screw propeller. This was the newest invention in maritime technology. By seeing how to combine these key innovations, Brunel created a ship that changed history.
